Central Figures

The Sacred Antinous features an array of characters whose lives were touched or affected by the God Antinous. Although many of them have been fictionalized for the sake of the storytelling, some of them are based on actual persons from history. Those who appear in the historical record are indicated with an asterix (*). Actual portraits are denoted with a (^) mark; otherwise, the portraiture is of anonymous faces from the ancient world whose appearance approximates my vision for the character.

A sophist and orator from Arelata (Arles). He is the central character in The Oratory of Favorinus.

An aspiring grammarian, rhetorician and advocate. He was born in Cirta (Constantine), and was present in the party that accompanied Hadrian and Antinous on their Imperial tour. He would later distinguish himself under Antoninus.

Telesphorus (feast day: January 5) was Pope from about 126 to about 138. Originally from Greece, his pontificate began during the reign of Hadrian, during which he witnessed the persecution of Christians, and ended during the reign of Antoninus Pius. The writer Irenaeus claims that Telesphorus was martyred; he is traditionally described as the first pope after St. Peter to have suffered that fate. He appears as a major character throughout The Gospel of Hadrian.

A contemporary of Antinous while at the Paedagogium ad Caput Africae. He was revealed to be a Christian and was murdered for it. His suspected murderer was not punished for the crime.

A young man who was in the party that accompanied Hadrian and Antinous on their Imperial tour.

Recordkeeper of Lepontus and friend of Malitnus. He passes the letters on to Mordanticus.

Bromidus
Assistant to Anaxamenos (Keeper of the Tack) after Anitnous was promoted to Keeper of the Personal Horse.
Dominicus
Keeper of the Imperial Horse.
Epolonius
A magistrate in Claudiopolis who alerted Gryllus to the existence of young Antinous.
Florentius
Officer of the Stables.
Lepontus
Castellan of the Sacred Palace -- the highest ranking official in charge of the daily operations at the Palatine Hill. Lepontus is mentioned in the second group of The Epistles of Antinous.
Marianus
2nd Favourite of Hadrian after Lucius Commodus and before Corinthus.
Petasius
Master of the Household Page, Paedagogiarch of the Domus Gelotiana. He reports to Lepontus, the Castellan of the Sacred Palace. Petasius is mentioned in the second group of The Epistles of Antinous.
Quintillius
Assistant to Dominicus, Keeper of the Imperial Horse.
